OBSERVING

There is only one golden leaf left

on the winter tree

near the river

a pigeon,

perched on a corner shop gutter

watches me

only turning its head

to follow a passing bus

towering over city traffic

on the crowded bridge

a woman begs loudly

with a paper cup.
